FAQ

Do I need to purchase a dedicated IP address?

Most customers do not need a dedicated IP. You can also purchase one later if you need to from inside the Customer Portal.

In the past, dedicated IPs were required to use an SSL certificate. This is no longer the case. However, while you do not need to have a dedicated IP to install an SSL certificate (and our free AutoSSL certificates work without a dedicated IP) the technology that enables that to work (Server Name Indication) is not 100% adopted. It works in about 98% of browsers. So if that 2% is important to you, you would want a dedicated IP.

The other reason people get a dedicated IP is so their email sending reputation is not affected by others on the server. Our main shared server IP does periodically go through blacklisting (maybe 1-2 times a year), simply due to account owners getting hacked. We try to prevent this, but it's one of the main support headaches we face as an email service provider and it's not entirely preventable. So if 100% email deliverability is a high priority, and you plan to use our server to send mail (rather than use another service like Gmail), a dedicated IP may be a good option for you.
